($20) Bright gold. A wild, expressive bouquet of orange peel, pear, Thai basil and minerals, with a deeper note of fresh fig. Supple, ginger-accented orchard fruit and herb flavors are given bite by bitter citrus and white pepper notes, offering a suave marriage of power and vivacity. The clean finish features gentle mineral cut and a repeating pear note. I could drink this all day.

($22) Yellow-gold. Ripe pear and white peach on the nose, with complicating notes of honey and chamomile. Supple, juicy orchard fruit and melon flavors are enlivened by gentle tangerine and lemon curd qualities, picking up a slight warmth on the back end. Finishes with very good persistence and a lingering note of candied pear.

Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds-Sep/oct 2010 ($20; 80% treixadura, 10% godello and 5% each of loureira and albarino) Light gold. Pungent, mineral-laced aromas of citrus pith, green apple and herbs, plus a hint of white pepper. Then surprisingly ample on the palate, offering deep but energetic orchard fruit and bitter citrus flavors and a sexy floral quality. Closes on a firm mineral note, with very good spicy persistence. This is powerful enough to work with buttery dishes but has the vivacity to give pleasure on its own.

($28; a blend of treixadura, godello, loureira and lado) Bright yellow. Expressive, slightly exotic aromas of orange peel, nectarine and honey, complemented by a strong leesy quality. Then tactile, chewy and concentrated in the mouth, with musky ginger, orange and pear skin flavors and a hint of smoky minerals. This dense but lively wine conveys power without any excess weight. Finishes with subtle mineral and floral notes and very good persistence.

 

Gomariz X 2008 Albarino

91 points, Ribeiro by cellar Maria Alvarez Serrano. Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds-Sep/oct 2010 ($22) Light, bright gold. Sexy aromas of poached pear, lemon curd, toasty lees and flowers, with a spicy overtone. Juicy, palate-coating orchard fruit flavors stain the palate, with zesty minerality providing lift. Silky and penetrating wine, more stony than the regular Ribeiro but with similar depth and power. The smoky note echoes on the finish.

Abadía de Gomariz 2008

88 points, Ribeiro Tinto by cellar Maria Alvarez Serrano. Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds-Sep/oct 2010 ($22; a blend of souson, brancellao, ferrol and mencia) Bright violet. Blackberry and cherry aromas are complicated by notes of smoked meat and herbs. Gently sweet and seamless, with slightly warm dark fruit flavors and suggestions of candied licorice and black pepper. Comes up short on the finish but I like this wine's silkiness and mellow dark fruit character.

 

VX 5 Cuvee Caco 2006

90 points, Vino de Mesa, Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds-Sep/oct 2010 ($34; a blend based on the native souson, with , caino longo, caiño da terra and carabuneira, Ruby-red. Spicy red berry and cherry aromas are complicated by smoky oak, minerals and Indian spices. A chewy, spicy midweight that delivers a solid cherry/berry punch without excess weight, showing a smoky oak quality on the lively back half. The finish is bright and pleasantly bitter, with the wood element in harmony with the fruit. Aside from the oak notes this reminds me a little of a Loire red for its pungent, earthy character, tension and relatively light touch. 90 points, Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds, jul/aug 2009 ($18; a blend of treixadura, godello and loureira) Light green-yellow. Intriguing aromas of white peach, green tea, pear skin, nectarine and jasmine, with an underpinning of talc. Deeppitched orchard fruit and lemon flavors are firmed by dusty minerals and pick up a zesty white pepper note with air. Manages to meld power and energy, and displays very good finishing clarity and lingering spiciness.

 

Coto de Gomariz Colleita Seleccionada 2006

90 points, Stephen Tanzer´s International Wine Cellar, Josh Raynolds, jul/aug 2009 ($26; a blend of treixadura, godello and loureira) Light yellow-gold. Expansive aromas of melon, peach, lees, minerals and smoked meat. Smells like a serious, soil-driven white Burgundy. Firm on entry, then quickly fleshes out to offer gently sweet orchard and pit fruit flavors and a sexy buttery quality.
